Central Pollution Control Board to introduce noise governors

The Central Pollution Control Board is literally getting its acts together. After issuing strict guidelines on controlling air pollution, CPCB has now shifted its focus to controlling noise and water pollution. As per the plan, CPCB is planning to install noise governors on instruments and equipments that produce too much sound. Similar to speed governors in vehicles, noise governors are inbuilt instruments that help keep the sound levels within the tolerable limits.

The CPCB will aid the environment ministry in managing the national ambient noise monitoring network. The network meant for noise mapping of the country will be functional within next five years. Cutting noise pollution has become a crucial issue with densely populated urban areas crossing the 80 decibel level, a level beyond which could be harmful and hurtful. Delhi is on the borderline with an average sound intensity of 80b. However, other metro cities have crossed this danger mark. Kolkatta it is 87b, Mumbai 85b and Chennai 89b. Vehicular noise is being considered as the major contributor to noise pollution. That apart, even uncontrolled use of loudspeakers is also adding to the noise pollution.

Water Pollution is yet another issue that calls for immediate attention. The poor water quality is said to the prime reason for many health problems increasingly faced by the people. The release of untreated urban sewage, dumping of industrial waste has apparently polluted major rivers across the country. Cremation and disposal of leftovers of religious rituals have added to the pollution levels. In fact industries are considered to be the prime culprits for releasing untreated sewage in water bodies. The buzz is that only 10 percent of the waste water is appropriately treated before releasing into the rivers, sea or water bodies. In most of the national rivers, aquatic fauna is perished given the decline in the water’s oxygen content. Certainly, crores of rupees have been spent on river cleaning programmes, the case in point being Ganga Action Plan. However all these programmes have gone kaput with negligible improvement in the quality of the water. Some damage control measures should be taken up as soon as possible or situation may get out of hand.
